I often forget how much I love hearing colorful Texas expressions. But when I visit my childhood home in the northeastern part of the state, I’m reminded “right quick.”
Today, I’m takin’ you back to the lone star state for a little grammar lesson. Let’s explore verbs!
Play possum – I said this to my son just this morning. It’s when someone’s pretending to do something, but most especially pretending to sleep.
Ex. “It’s time to go so school. Stop playin’ possum and get outta bed.”
Bawl – cry.
Ex. “Son, if you don’t stop that bawlin’, I’m gonna take you out behind the shed and give you somethin’ to bawl about!”
Domino – give birth. I think this is an older one, but I always heard my dad say it when he saw a massively pregnant woman.
Ex. “Looks like that one’s about to domino.”
Ironically, dominos are often called bones.
Ex. “Shake them bones so we can get on with this game of 42.”

Today is Ninja Day. If you haven’t gotten a gander at the Redneck Ninja on YouTube, your life is a sad, barren wasteland. Celebrate Ninja Day by dressing in black (or a red cape and bandana) and judy-chopping someone who sorely needs ninjin!
