Red Hot Reads: Lions of Kandahar

Title: Lions of Kandahar: The Story of a Fight Against All Odds

Author: Kevin Mauer and Rusty Bradley

Genre: Military History, Memoir

Why Lions of Kandahar is a Red Hot Read: While researching my latest book, I downloaded several book samples written about and by Special Forces teams. Lions of Kandahar made the cut to the final two. It’s about Operation Medusa, a little publicized campaign fought in Afghanistan in 2006. The book is written from the perspective of Major Rusty Bradley, who led a team during the campaign. He allows the reader a snapshot of what it’s like to be right in the heart of war, with all it’s stress, filth, hilarity and heartbreak. Whether or not you’re a proponent of the U.S.’s military involvement in Afghanistan and other places all over the world, you have to admire this man’s story about actions he believes are right and the people he and his team fought for. It’s an especially illuminating account of how U.S. Army Special Forces interacts with the locals they’re fighting and working with.

Today is National Fortune Cookie day, so go find yourself a Chinese buffet or a Panda Express. Maybe even skip the Kung Pao Chicken and the Mu Shu Pork and head straight for the crunchy little folded up cookies. Or if you’re ambitious, make your own! That way, you can stack the fortune deck in your favor. 🙂
