Ilona Andrews - Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1)
This husband and wife team has written more than one great series but my favorite is their Kate Daniels series. I can read it over and over. Main character Kate Daniels is down-to-earth and gritty enough to make you enjoy her. She’s not perfect but is tough, loyal and you root for her all the way as she battles an array of paranormal creature with unique twists. Some you’ll love others you’ll love to hate. Magic Bites introduces you to Kate’s world, a dangerous and unpredictable one where she holds her own even as her world is in constant upheaval.
Darynda Jones - First Grave on the Right
Clever, laugh-out-loud funny and with a crazy cast of characters that you’ll come to love this series will hook you from the start. This is a book to read when you need to laugh. Charley Davidson: part-time investigator and full-time Grim Reaper is lovable and quirky, her antics will make you wish she was your best-friend and her love interest Reyes will tempt you into dark places.
First Grave on the Right will start you on this award-winning series. Don’t you just love when there is more than one book to enjoy? I do!
Stacia Kane - Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts Book 1)
Stacia takes has built a world where nothing is as it should be. The government has fallen, the dead have risen and a tattooed witch is a talented ghost hunter. The heroine Chess is not your typical perfect heroine, she is flawed in many ways, drawn to the wrong sort of man and yet she still has readers adoring the good and bad parts of her.
This is a dark novel; don’t pick it up unless you want to read about flaws and a very dark world Chess inhabits. Not an easy read but a satisfying one because of its uniqueness.
C.E. Murphy - Urban Shaman (The Walker Papers Book 1)
Since I’m a sucker for a protagonist who doesn’t have all her stuff together C.E. Murphy’s heroine, Joanne Walker, is right up my alley. Joanne is a former-cop and budding shaman who finds herself suddenly saving the world, while learning how to deal with newly emerging powers. Murphy is descriptive in her novels, making you really feel the realness of the urban world she’s created. Just to spice things up Murphy throws some interesting characters into the mix including a Celtic god. How could you go wrong?
