There’s only one bad thing about birthdays…getting older.
When I was a kid, I’d look forward to my birthday all summer. The only downer being school would already be back in session. But, on the up side, the Gregg County Fair almost always hit the week of my birthday. And if a rodeo, stuffed animals, and cotton candy (and its resurgence after a too-long ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl) doesn’t scream Happy Birthday, I don’t know what does.
That was then. This is now.
On Sunday, I returned home after almost a week in North Carolina. Tech Guy and I were discussing plans for the week and I casually mentioned it might be nice if we had lunch on Thursday or Friday.
He said, “You think?”
Um, yeah…it wasn’t until I looked at my calendar later Monday morning that I realized Thursday was my birthday. How friggin’ sad is that?
So now, I’ve decided a birthday warrants a day off. (I’ve always believed that but haven’t always had the ability to make it happen.) So today, I’ll celebrate by:
- Drinking more than one cup of coffee
- Staying in my PJs all morning (okay, so that’s normal. Stop nitpicking.)
- Having lunch with Tech Guy at some yet undetermined fabulous place
- Reading a book in the afternoon
- Possibly going out to eat AGAIN with Tech Guy and Smarty Boy
May not sound incredibly glamorous, but just knowing I can do what I want for 24 hours makes my birthday a great one!
What do you do to celebrate your birthday?

In addition to my birthday, today is Patriot Day (and several others in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy). Take a moment to reflect on that day. The day that our world stopped turning. And then, as Americans tend to do, we got back up, dusted ourselves off, and gave that sucker a spin. Do something today that honors all those people who sacrificed their lives.
