One of our (many thanks to Heather Machel!) favorite things to do each year is curate a list of fabulous gifts for both readers and writers! This year, we're highlighting unique and fun items you can find on Etsy, which means many of these are offered by small business owners. As a small business owner myself, I know how important it is to support folks who make their living from creating cool shit!
Read on for suggestions for every budget. Also, here's our list of the 30 Gifts for Readers in case you missed it!
(Disclosure: I am an Etsy affiliate. If you click and purchase any of the below items, I may earn a small commission, but your cost for the item will NOT be affected.)
Gifts Under $50
So, yeah, I love this because it's got a boatload of words on it. But even more importantly, it includes words of wisdom and encouragement for those times when the writing isn't toodling along just fine. Writers are slightly neurotic. We need encouragement and praise to fuel our work!
Around this time of year, my hands are constantly cold. And I live in Georgia, y'all. If I'm cold, a bunch of other writers are too. These gloves come in several fun literary versions to keep your favorite writer's most important tool toasty warm!
An adorable decorative dose of inspiration. These folded books take a great deal of patience and skill to make, so your writer will appreciate that a book that might've otherwise been tossed has become an up-cycled treasure.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that I cannot abide wearing bracelets (which I LOVE) while I am writing. The jangle on my keyboard is too much for me to take. But this cute bracelet would be fabulous to wear to a writing conference or reader event (assuming we ever have those again! LOL).
When a writer is hot into a story and the words are coming fast and furious, there's often little time for personal hygiene - LOL. This cap will keep those less than shiny locks under wraps. 🙂
Gifts Under $25
Most writers I know are also word collectors. We love learning and using new words. This fun monthly calendar would be a beautiful project planner or word count recorder.
If I have to further explain this, you've missed the point, people. And I can't resist a great pun like this!
Ah, the Oxford comma... So much disagreement about such a small blob of ink. But if your writer friend is a staunch supporter of the final comma option, this is a great little notebook for her to scribble down ideas and commas to her heart's desire.
This poster comes without a frame, but it's such a beauty that it wouldn't be a hardship to grab a poster frame from Target or other online retailer to complete the gift.
Because, well... it's freaking 2020 and masks have become not only a necessity, but a fashion statement as well. If we all gotta wear a mask, we might as well be able to wear one that illustrates our passion for words.
OMG - this is pretty damn perfect. Any writer who tells you the writing process is always easy is either a liar or... a liar. Let them know you care and sympathize with their writing challenges with this mug.
Many writers collect pins and wear them at writing conferences. This would make a great addition to your writer's conference badge!
This one is just plain cute and even if it isn't helpful on the plotting front, it'll allow your writer to procrastinate productively. 🙂
Because many writers turn caffeine into books, right? This would be super-fun in combo with the Being a Writer Mug above.
One of my fav writing quotes. Even if your writer isn't a tippler while crafting a book, she probably deserves a nip after the day's word count is done.
Another mug to pair perfectly with the Writer's Block Coffee.
Just. Can't. Resist. A great t-shirt. This one looks comfy-soft and is a reminder to just keep writing even when it all feels like a dumpster fire.
Because we all need some inspiration in our writing lairs. Honestly, this would be more fun if it were a kit your writer could make herself, but it's still a great bit of writerly/readerly decor.
How many times have your writer friends been looking off into the distance while you're talking to them? Yeah, they're daydreaming of people and worlds that no one else can see. And that's why they write - to let loose all that stuff trapped inside them!
So, yes. I want about five of these to stack one on top of the other. Wouldn't it be fun to have one for all our many roles? Writer, reader, lover, advocate, warrior, rock star, sister... The list is long and personal for each person!
Gifts Under $10/Stocking Stuffers
All my pairs of Converse need these - just sayin'. Nothing would make a writer happier than to look down and find words at her feet.
If your writer is a big planner person, this would definitely be a welcome surprise in her stocking. What better way to celebrate daily word count than with these cute typewriter stickers?
So it's highly possible that I will order one of these stickers and slip it in my own stocking - LOL. Because as every writer knows, it's effing terrifying when the voices stop, and when they return? Ah, like coming home to nirvana.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that writers are uber-picky about their writing implements, but even I can't resist a pen with my name on it.
These are some seriously gorgeous bookmarks at a fabulous price for your writer's stocking.
This would be an especially good gift for the newbie writer who isn't sure what to write about or how to get started. It's often easier to jumpstart your creativity this way.
These are so pretty that your writer might be tempted to just pop these in a pretty container and decorate with them.
Splurge Gifts (over $50)
What a fun way for your writer to keep all her craft books neat and in order! Okay, let's be real for a minute... Your writer would likely need several sets of these to keep track of all those resources, but she can corral her all-time favs with this set.
The same sentiment as the poster above, but on a really gorgeous ornament. It could go on a holiday tree or be a pretty reminder that your writer hangs near her desk.
Most of us have seen this famous Toni Morrison quote but maybe not on a beautiful wood clock like this. Again, a fabulous addition to the stylish writer's lair.
